Thursday Thirteen #66-Things that get me through 9/11

Yes, today is not exactly a chipper day. And while the whole country seems to attack the northeast US for its liberalism, we have also lived some "fun". I was in Central Jersey, watching it all as jet fighters screamed over my house. So pardon me if I am cranky.

Thursday Thirteen #64-The Vacation Contest One

****sticky post***

As Mrs Duck and I prepare to go on a well needed vacation, I figured to keep blog traffic at least a little bit up, I would run a contest.

So, I am going to give you 13 questions, each correct answer will count for one entry in the contest. Almost all of the questions will be answerable if you just search the blog, though at least 3 of the questions will take some knowledge of Sparky and Mrs Duck.

Oh yea, prizes. The winner of the contest will get a $20 gift card of there choice and also a souvenir from vacation, which will have a retail value of at least $5. If there is a tie on correct answers, the winner will be drawn from a blind draft. The contest runs from 11:00 pm Wednesday, April 16th until noon Wednesday April 23.

Now on to the fun part.

1.Who did Sparky vote for in the Presidential election of 2004?

2.My parents have lived in 4 different states since they retired, name one of them?

3.Mrs Duck and I saw a concert in Atlantic City, what female singer was the headliner?

4.We have 2 cats, name one of them?

5.On our honeymoon in 2006, we visited 3 states. Besides Hawaii, name one of the states we visited?

6.Our hotel in Honolulu was a certain color, what color was it?

7.I have worked for a few places in my professional career. One company had many names although I worked in the same building. Name one of the companies that I worked for?

8.Where are we on vacation right now?

9.Who did I want to win the 2008 NCAA Basketball Championship?

10.I have posted a few recipes on this blog, name one?

12.Name one music video I have posted on this blog.

13.What is the name of the Philly Transplant sister blog?

Simple isnt it? Plus, anyone that links this post with there own post about it gets an extra entry.

Thursday Thirteen #62-The Consumerist one

Thirteen Articles from This Weeks Consumerist

I have been slacking with my Thursday Thirteen posts recently, partly because I have been swamped at work and partly because I do not want to give either of the Democratic candidates the patented Sparky Duck kiss of death.
So, I have been reading Consumerist faithfully this week, getting my news and the like. Its actually been better than the news on TV, because it actually talks about stuff that is affecting us.

So 13 stories from this week...

1.How some bars in the North are getting around a smoking ban

2.Comcast being Comcast and affecting your credit while they are at it.

3.Is your vet ripping you off? Yes usually

4.Banks sure should be not for profit, since they make no profit

5.Comcast is one of the worst in the country

6.Verizon will be with you sometime between Monday & Friday

7.I need damned Hybrid

8.Phew, the Duck family is not the only ones who love Credit Cards

9.Somebody that sells Nano missed this whole recession thing

Thursday Thirteen #61-The Car One

Thirteen Things about My Old Car

As I mentioned a while back, my last car was kind of totaled in a bit of an accident. I never really went into the story of what happened and now that everything is resolved, I figure I will soon enough. But here are 13 ways my car was not in an accident, maybe.

1.I got way way too close to a volcano

2.I told Mrs Duck that the show Lost was overrated and she took revenge.

3.One word:Flamethrower

4.I yelled Go Cowboys at an Eagles tailgate party.

5.I tried to channel my inner Evil Kneival

6.I thought a Corolla would make a great Zamboni.

7.Indigestion after some really spicy Mexican food, the interior never recovered.

8.I decided to take a scenic tour of Camden

9.What? Who knew cars don't float?

10.I thought the fact that I only had a few payments left was a bad thing.

11.The urban legend about the hook in the roof really happened.

12.I am a big fan of the Calgary Flames

13.I am just a freaking idiot

Thursday Thirteen #60-The Kucinich One

Thirteen Things about Dennis Kucinich

I had to scrap the 13 things about Fred Thompson, because well, he is now trying to see if he can get back into his chair at Law & Order, since the running for President thing did not work out so well. So, our my next choice was Dennis Kucinich.

1. The official theme for the Kucinich run this time is Strength Through Peace.

2. Kucinich is a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing the 10th District in Ohio.

3. Kucinich was the Mayor of Cleveland in the late 70s, where at the age of 31, he was one of the youngest Mayors in the country

4.He won election for his seat in the House in 1996 and has been reelected 5 times since.

5.Kucinich calls himself a Wellstone Democrat, following in the footsteps of the late Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, meaning he skews towards the liberal side.

6.Kucinich voted against the Patriot Act and he also voted to investigate whether there were sufficient grounds to impeach Bill Clinton.

7.He also voted to not count the 31 delegates from Ohio that were going to G.W. Bush in 2004 because of the involvement of Diebold Voting Machines and there lack of a paper trail.

8.He also voted against the war in Iraq

9.His best showing in the 2004 Democratic Primary was 31% in Hawaii.

10.for his 2008 run, Kucinich has had a fundraiser thrown for him by Larry Flynt and also has been endorsed by Viggo Morgensen

11.He has also confirmed the story in a Shirley McClaine autobiography, Shirley is a relative by the way, in which Kucinich claimed to have seen a UFO.

12.His wife is Hot, especially for a candidates wife.

13.He has again not found too much traction in the few early primaries this year, though many people find him to be a nice draw in debates, due to his desire to tell the truth.

Thursday Thirteen #59-The Duncan Hunter One

Thirteen Things about Duncan Hunter

As a way to help the political electorate out there, I figure I would do some Thursday Thirteens here and there about the folks running for the highest office in the land. Of course, it was too late for some people (Sorry Tommy Thompson, Joe Biden & Chris Dodd) but the show must go on.

Before I run out of time and he quits the race, lets get 13 things about Duncan Hunter.

1.Duncan Hunter is a Republican member of the US House of Representatives, representing Eastern & Northern parts of San Diego.

2.He was born May 31, 1948 in Riverside, California

3.He served in the US Army in Vietnam and made it to the highest rank of 1st Lieutenant and was awarded a bronze star

4.One of Hunter's sons also served in the Army, making it to 1st Lieutenant as well after serving in Iraq in 2003 & 2004

5.Hunter served in the House of Reps from 1980 up until this year, when he will not seek re-election to run for President instead. His son, Duncan D, the war hero, will try and replace him in 2008.

6.As of summer 2007, Hunter has missed 31% of the votes in this session of Congress.

7.Hunter is the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, which is currently chaired by Ike Skelton, Democrat of Missouri.

8.Hunter sponsored HR 552, the Right to Life act, which would have protected born and pre born persons. Personhood would have been defined at beginning at conception. Now someone tell me what personhood is exactly. HR 552 never made it to the floor for debate.

9.He also sponsored legislation for a Security fence in Southern California and also tried to make distribution of materials deemed pornographic by parents illegal.

10.Shockingly, Hunter considers himself a True Conservative.

11.Hunter has consistenly gotten less than 3% in National Republican polls, though he has won the Maricopa County Straw Poll and the Spartanburg, South Carolina Straw poll.

12.This seals the deal for me in the other direction, Ann Coulter has endorsed Hunter for President

13.Hunter has finished in 7th place in both the Iowa Caucus and the New Hampshire Primaries. But he will always have Maricopa County, Arizona.

Thursday Thirteen #58-The Chestnut One/Express 13

Thirteen Things about Chestnuts

Yes, we continue on our holiday adventure, even on the Thursday Thirteen. If the stores can overload us on Christmas, why can't a simple blog??

1.A Chestnut tree can grow to be twenty to forty feet tall, but the nuts can also fall from a shrub or low lying bush. (Man that sounds kinky)

2.A true Chestnut should not be confused with a horse chestnut (a buckeye) or a water chestnut, since they really are not related, even though the nuts are similiar.

3.Chestnuts are important to the survival of Blue Jays, Squirrels and Pigeons.

4.The nuts can be eaten candied, boiled or roasted; the former are often sold under the French name marrons glacés. Another important use of chestnuts is to be ground into flour, which can then be used to prepare bread, cakes and pasta.

5.The wood of the Sweet Chestnut is most used in small items where durability is important, such as fencing and wooden outdoor cladding ('shingles') for buildings. In Italy, it is also used to make barrels used for aging balsamic.

6.In Jane Eyre, written by Charlotte Bronte, A chestnut tree outside of Thornfield Hall is broken in two by lightning. This foreshadows the impending break-up of Rochester and Jane's marriage. (oops, spoiler alert)

7.Legend has it that the Greek army survived on their stores of chestnuts during their retreat from Asia Minor in 401-399 B.C.

8.The jazz standard April in Paris by Vernon Duke and E.Y. Harburg begins, "April in Paris / Chestnuts in blossom".

9.

10.If you are tempted to eat chestnuts raw, think again. These nuts must be boiled or roasted before eating due to the high levels of tannic acid. The nuts are cured for about a week to permit their starch to develop into sugar, thus sweetening the meat. They must be cooked completely in order to avoid digestive discomfort.

11.Of course, chestnuts are best known at Holiday time for its prominence in The Christmas Song, which was made famous by Nat King Cole, but was actually written by Mel Torme.

12.

13.Okay, hard to come up with 13 things about Chestnuts, so I will just take this chance to mention again the Christmas Card list post from a few days back. Yes I have mentioned it often haven't I?

Thursday Thirteen #57-A quick and dirty one

Thirteen Things I have learned in the last ten days

Yes, I have been back to work, and things have been a little bit different.

1.If you have to commute along the PA Turnpike and you are not getting paid 6 figures, you are not getting paid enough money.

2.Especially if you have to commute past the Norristown exit, where there is not only construction on the road, but on all the exits.

3.Its amazing what you see before 7 am, like this morning I caught sight of 6 hawks.

4.I enjoy the small pleasures now, like being able to sleep past 8 am.

5.Which is what I plan to do this weekend, since I do not need to work.

6.You also forget how easy it is to let a day off go to waste, I looked at how little I accomplished last Monday and felt like it was all for nothing.

7.Back roads can save you time, but once there is an accident in front of you, your goose/duck is cooked.

8.Coffee is a necessity of life.

9.I do not smoke as much as I used to, probably because I just dont have as much chance to.

10.But when I do smoke, its usually more the one, gotta get all the nicotine I can.

11.It is probably worse when you have to work until 6 pm instead of having to get to work at 8 am.

12.Cooking can now sometimes be a chore.

13.I actually have skills when it comes to doing the job I do.

Thursday Thirteen #56-A Philly Followup One

Thirteen Things about The Cassidy Story

Again, it was synergy, after last weeks post, I should give a follow up on the murder of Officer Charles Cassidy, since everything wrapped up in the last week.

1. John Jordan Lewis was arrested over the weekend in Miami, Florida.

2.No he is not one of those crazy middle name people, apparently Mr Lewis just liked the name Jordan as opposed to John.

3.In his cousins house, the revolver of Officer Cassidy, plus another weapon was found during a search.

4.A observant Greyhound bus driver spotted Lewis, remembered his face and also remembered where he was going, which lead to his arrest.

5.In a note of irony, John Timoney, the most beloved police commissioner Philadelphia may have ever had, is the police chief in Miami and got to announce the accused murderers arrest.

6.Officer Cassidy was laid to rest today.

7.1,500 people attended the funeral at the Bassilica Cathedral of Peter and Paul, hundreds more watched the ceremony outside on closed circuit TV

8.Officers from at least 3 states attended.

9.Cassidy's funeral procession wound its way through areas that he patroled and also the neighborhoods that he grew up in and lived in all his life.

10.Officers on duty from the 35th District saluted there fallen comrade outside there Police station.

11.Students from his catholic high school stood outside as the procession pasted there school. Officer Cassidy was then laid to rest at the Holy Sepulchre Cemetary in Cheltenham.

12.As that was going on, Lewis refused to fight extradiction from Florida, confessed to killing the officer on TV news cameras and apologized to the family, a bit too late.

13.This is the best video I could find on Youtube, though I must admit, there was not enough bagpipes featured for my taste. Though honestly, it still made me cry.

14.A memorial fund has been established for the family, including Officer Cassidy's 3 college age children.

Mail a check payable to:
The Charles Cassidy Family Memorial Trust Fund
901 Arch Street
Philadelphia, PA 19107

Thursday Thirteen #55-A sad one

Thirteen Things about Charles Cassidy

Not the idea of a list that I had today, but events happen and you sort of roll with what strikes you at the time.

1.Charles Cassidy is 54 years old, a Philadelphia Police officer in the 35th District.

2.He has a wife and 3 children, two daughters in college and one son in a catholic city high school.

3.He has 25 years on the Philadelphia police force.

4.In fact, just a few weeks back, friends and family threw a part to celebrate his 25th year.

5.Officer Cassidy routinely made stops in the West Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia during his shift

6.One of those stops was at a local Dunkin Donuts at the corner of 66th and Broad Street.

7.Yesterday, at around 10:30 in the morning, Officer Cassidy made his stop, like he routinely does, pulling into the front of the donut shop in his Police SUV.

8.Yesterday, Officer Cassidy happened into an armed robbery in progress in the Donut shop.

9.Officer Cassidy was shot one time in the head before he could even draw his gun or enter the establishment. In fact he was shot outside the store, while assailant was inside at the front counter.

10.The shooter is said to be a heavyset African American male, around 6 feet tall, with a spider tattoo on his left hand. He also possibly has a limp when running. Police are also looking for a Crown Victoria that may have had some involvement.

11.This is the best surveillance tape picture so far of the shooter, in the background by the door you can see the outline of Officer Cassidy in his white shirt and dark tie.

12.Officer Cassidy was rushed to Albert Einstein hospital, with a gunshot wound to his head and the bullet in his brain.

13.Officer Cassidy passed away at around 9:40 am this morning, November 1, 2007. His murderer is still at large at present.

Thursday Thirteen #53-The Faerie Con One

Thirteen Artists & Authors at Faerie Con 2007

Faerie Con 2007 is coming to Philadelphia this weekend. Since I am all wrapped up in a bunch of things this weekend, I will not be able to get down there. That, or I am a chicken when it comes to sharing the idea that I like Faeries. Either way, I won't be able to get there, but there will be plenty of very talented artists. Here are 13 that will be there.

1. Brian and Wendy Froud. They are apparently the guests of honor.

Brian Froud
Wendy Froud

2.Holly Black. She is not actually an artist, but an author, best known for the Spiderwick Chronicles, which apparently is being turned into a movie.

3.Barbara Moore is an author and certified Tarot Card Reader, including the beautifully drawn book Mystic Faerie Tarot. I think one of the reasons Tarot Cards intrigue me is because they are just gorgeous.

4.Jessica Beckett-Griffith is a Faerie artist who allows her drawings to show her influences in the Mayan, Hindu and Greek traditions.

5.Jacqueline Collen Tarroly

6.J.Cosentino of a Time of the Faeries. His artwork is actually pictures, not drawings and it is knock your socks off beautiful.

7.Kinuko Craft-An artist that uses her images to tell a story as opposed to just being visually stunning.

8.Jessica Galbreath
, painter of myth, magik and enchantment.

9.Ted Naismith, who is best known for his illustrations of some J.R. Tolkien books.

10.Linda Ravenscroft is the artist/illustrator of the Mystic Faerie Tarot books written by Barbara Moore (who I mentioned earlier).

11.Helen Nelson Reed-an artist that works in Watercolors, which just has to be magnificent to see in person.

12.Josephine Wall, who seems to go into to things I love, faeries and water.

13.Jen Delyth, a celtic illustrator who focuses alot of her works on the magik of nature.

So there you go, now you know what we both will be missing, which now that I researched it more, kinda really sucks.

Thursday Thirteen #55 1972 One

Thirteen Things about 1972

While I really considered doing a TT on Thirteen reasons I hate Comcast, since they are disturbing my one morning in the last few weeks where I could sleep late with there construction outside my window, I decided to stick with plan A. It is some ducks birthday soon, so I figured I would do a little ditty about the year he or she was born. So, 13 things from 1972.

1.January 5, 1972-President Nixon signs off on an order to start the development of the Space Shuttle program.
Perhaps he was trying to update his surveillance systems.

2.February 5, 1972-Bob Douglas is the first African American elected to the basketball hall of fame. Douglas was the founder of the New York Renaissance and was the first black manager in sports history.

3.February 17, 1972-The Volkswagen Beetle sales exceed the Ford Model T in number when number 15,007,34 beetle is produced. At least they did not explode like Pintos.

4.March 24, 1972-The Godfather is released in theaters. I have seen this version, but never in one sitting. I think it took 20 different cable showings to see it fully. Too bad I didnt do that with Godfather 3.

5.May 15, 1972-Governor George Wallace of Georgia is shot at an Laurel, Maryland political rally.

6.May 28, 1972-The First successful Watergate Break In-Arrogance in the White House is taken to a new, super crazy level.

7.June 17, 1972-Five White House operatives are arrested for the Watergate break in, which happened to be home of the Democratic National Committee
-They did realize they were running against George McGovern, right?

8.July 21, 1972-George Carlin is arrested in Milwaukee for public obscenity after doing his 7 things you can't say on TV rant.
Those 7 words? Piss, shit, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and Tits. And here I thought Mother effer was two words.

9.September 4, 1972-The First episode of the Price is Right is shown on TV. Unspayed or neutered pets around the world celebrate.

10.September 5, 1972-The Munich Disaster occurs at the Olympics in Germany. Amazingly I can not even come up with a joke.

11.October 5, 1972-Sparky Duck's alter ego is born.

12.October 25, 1972-The first female FBI agents are hired. J. Edgar Hoover gets new people to share makeup secrets with.

13.December 31, 1972-Roberto Clemente dies in a plane crash en route to taking supplies and relief to Earthquake victims in Venezuela. Some Pirates fans still have not recovered.

Thursday Thirteen #53-The Made in New Jersey One

Thirteen Things products Made in New Jersey

A couple of weeks back, the Rutgers Football team put a thumping on the Naval Academy. The game was known for Ray Rice becoming the all time leading rusher in school history, and it was also known for the awful behavior of the Rutgers student section. Now, I do not condone harsh words and a spew of obscene gestures at the opposing team, though a little booing here or there is acceptable in any sporting event, even if the opponent is the one of the service academies. Now, a BullS**T chant at a referee, thats all fun and games.

But, I felt the need to defend my state, because every single person that is a fan in NJ is being painted with the same brush, awful loutish people. Now, I know a list will do nothing to change peoples opinions, but maybe if I tell everyone about all the great things they get from the Garden State (yes besides a bad smell, ha ha) it will help a little to improve our image.

1.Bosco Chocolate Syrup-Ok, its no Hershey's but its gotta be better then Ovaltine.

2.Campbells Soup-2 Billion soup cans a year can't be wrong.

3.Creative Products-All those great Seen on TV products, including the Bacon Wave and Blu Blocker Sun Glasses

4.Ecko Apparel-I have no idea, I don't wear his stuff, but I have heard of it.

5.Goya-The only brand of canned adobo chiles I can find.

6.Flying Fish Beer-This could be a recurring theme, since there seems to be alot of alcohol leaning beverages from NJ, but Flying Fish is one of my favorites.

7.Johnson & Johnson-Ok, not every product Johnson and Johnson makes come from NJ, but all of the money does.

8.Honeywell-They produce many products that are found in the home that I am sure you had no idea Honeywell made, just like me. Some them include thermostats, dampers fro furnaces and Jet Engines

9.Ingersoll-Rand-a manufacturing company that creates bobcats and other earth movers. But also makes Golf Carts!

10.Maidenform-Bras, ladies, Bras.

11.Toys R Us-Let me know how much you hate NJ for spawning this company at the holiday season when you can't find anything.

12.NFL Films-Have you ever settled down to watch some highlights of the great Steelers teams of the 70s? Chance are its an NFL Films production

13.Tabatchnik Fine Foods-The best split pea soup in a supermarket.

Thursday Thirteen #52-The Recipezaar One

Wow, I can not believe this is the 52nd week. Well I actually can believe it, Im just saying.

Thirteen Favorite Recipes From Recipezaar

Now, while these recipes are no where near as good as what is being cranked out by Dragon's Kitchen, when there are over 244,000 recipes, something has to be good. So, from Recipezaar, here are my Thirteen Favorite Recipes.

1.Chicago Style Hotdogs-Though I did not use Vienna Franks, they have always kinda skeeved me out.

2.Emeril's Lobster Cheesecake-Filling as all get out, even if you use imitation Lobster.

3.Fannie Farmers Classic Baked Macaroni and Cheese-Want Creamy, Use Velveeta

4.McDonald's Shamrock Shake
-Get Passed the green color and its great.

5.Tangier Island Baked Crab-I liked it, tasted like a big crabcake, Mrs Duck did not like the consistency. Use 2 eggs not 1.

6.Crab Rangoons-Delicious and easy.

7.Kung Pao Chicken-Anything with peanuts, I am all over!

8.Moroccan Chicken-I mentioned this one in Twitter, so I just had to share.

9.Shrimpin Dippin Broth-This was a great recipe for when Mrs Duck was just eating clears.

10.Smoky Mountain Chicken-Fantastic

11.PF Changs Chicken Lettuce Wraps-This is one of Mrs Duck's Favorites and also it can be like a salad, just serve over shredded lettuce.

12.Garlic Beef Enchiladas-When the recipe reviews say they take forever, they are not kidding, but it is one of my favorite recipes on this site.

13.Singapore Street Noodles-When Mrs Duck took her leftovers to work, I got 6 requests for the recipe.

One Bonus-A few weeks ago I mention Jack in The Box and I got some questions about there tacos, and this is what I found.

Hungry yet? Damn Im starving!

Thursday Thirteen #51-The Blue Ducks One

Thirteen Players on Sparky's Fantasy Football Team

Last week, I had our fantasy football draft. Its an auction draft, which means we have a one hundred dollar limit and have to pick 15 players out of that 100 dollars. I liked my team a lot better last year, but I might have a shot at the playoffs again this year. Yes, its a sports Thursday 13, I apologize ahead of time. So here are the 2007 Blue Ducks

1. Carson Palmer, QB-Cincinnati-Recovered fully now from a knee injury from 2 years ago and I am not really concerned about him being arrested.

2.Cedric Benson, RB-Chicago-Thomas Jones is gone to the Jets, so Cedric is the main man. Now, hopefully, he stays healthy.

3.DeAngelo Williams, RB-Carolina-Still sharing time with DeShaun Foster, I am hoping that all the talk is right and that he will take over for him by the end of the year.

4.Reggie Wayne, WR-Indianapolis-Peyton Manning does not have enough footballs to throw around, but he seems to like to send a good majority Wayne's way. We find out with the opening game tonight.

5.Roy Williams, WR-Detroit-Still a stud and with the Martz offense intact now, he should be even more of a stud. Or he better be.

6.Calvin Johnson, WR-Detroit-Rookie, but he was a man amongst boys last year in college, so he should be a pretty good man amongst men this year.

7.Marshawn Lynch, RB-Buffalo-The rookie running back who as soon as he was drafted became the top back for the Bills. Of course, he plays for the Buffalo Bills, so thats not good.

8.Chester Taylor, RB-Minnesota-Chester the Cheetah, sharing time with rookie Adrian Peterson in the Viking backfield. I figure by the end of the year I will have another reason to hate the ex Sooner Peterson, because he will outplay the Cheetah.

9.Greg Jennings, WR-Green Bay-Um, I have no idea why I have him besides the fact that Wayne, Williams and Johnson all have the same day off, so I need someone to fill in for them.

10.Marcedes Lewis, TE-Jacksonville-Admit it, he has a really cool name.

11.Neil Rackers, K-Arizona-I had to have at least one ,Phoenix Arizona Cardinal on my team so I don't just watch there games because I am a closet Cardinal fan.

12.Ted Ginn, JR, WR-Miami-I just have the feeling that he is going to have an explosive year once he gets used to the pros. Or, he will break his ankle again and I will just cut him.

13.Brian Leonard, RB-St Louis-He is a Rutgers guy and since I am a Jerseyan, we always pull for Rutgers guys. Plus Steven Jackson almost always misses a game or two.

Ok, I realize that this is a lot of gobbly goop to many people. Heck, its gobbly goop to me to, but since Football season starts tonight, it just fit as a Thursday Thirteen.

Thursday Thirteen #50-The P!nk One

Thirteen Questions From P!nk

See, I am even being technically correct, since that is the way the singer, Pink, spells her name on her Albums? CD's? Downloads? Eh, no matter. I have enjoyed a few songs by her immensely, though as time goes on, two seem to stick with me, Who Knew and this one I am sharing now. So, here are 13 Questions from Dear Mr President.

Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me.
Let's pretend we're just two people and
You're not better than me.
I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly.

1.What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street?
2.Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep?
3.What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
4.Are you proud?

5.How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
6.How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
7.How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
8.Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?

9.How can you say
No child is left behind?

We're not dumb and we're not blind.
They're all sitting in your cells
While you pave the road to hell.

10.What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?

11.And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine.

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
12.Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
You don't know nothing 'bout hard work
Hard work
Hard work
Oh

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
13.You'd never take a walk with me.
Would you?

I probably should have mentioned that when I get stressed, I get cranky. And when I get cranky, I hate smugness and arrogance. But, even if you don't agree, I would still love to hear what you have to say. Its all about discussion.

Ill try to visit when I can peoples ;p

Thursday Thirteen #49-The Arizona One

Thirteen Things about Arizona

Since my folks retired, they have lived in many different places. I think its because they get restless in one spot, so every few years or so, they move again. They are currently in the San Antonio area, but Mrs Duck and I have not visited there yet. Out of all the places they lived before Texas, Arizona was my favorite spot. So, 13 facts and bits about Arizona.

1.Arizona is the 48th state in the union. It was incorporated into the United States on February 14, 1912.

2.Whoever came up with the statement "But its a dry heat" has never been in Phoenix at 2 pm in August. About the only thing that is dry is the heat, because the rest of your body is soaked.

3.Arizona does not have daylight savings time. Which can get annoying when you are trying to call from the eastern time zone, because sometimes it is a 2 hour time difference and sometimes its 3.

4.They have a pretty cool state flag.

5.The Gin Blossoms, who I have already mentioned once this week, were based out of Arizona. Stevie Nicks was also born in Phoenix. It is usually a big deal when Fleetwood Mac makes an appearance there, like some sort of homecoming.

6.In July and August, Arizona experiences the Monsoon season, which features winds, heavy downpours and very very cool lightening.

7.Sedona is a city in Arizona that seems to have an artsy culture. Though I could see how artists are drawn there, when surrounded by the beautiful red rocks of Sedona, which almost appear to glow, or be alien rock formations.

8.Alice Cooper is also a famous musical son from the state. He has returned to open up a couple of sports bars, one located very close to Bank One Ballpark, which I am sure by now has changed its name. Cooper is a near fanatical golfer as well, which is probably another reason he decided to move back to Arizona.

9.Speaking of Golf courses, there are over 300 of them within the state.

10.Frank Lloyd Wright, one of the worlds most prominent architects, had his winter home, Taliesin West in Scootsdale. It is now open to the public and trust me, it is well worth the trip.

11.Arizona was home to German and Italian POW camps and Japanese Internment camps during World War 2. I actually visited a site of one of these camps, after it was closed of course, but did not know it at the time, since it is now the Phoenix Zoo.

12.Of course, Arizona is where I first experienced the wonder that is an In N Out Burger. This maybe one of the biggest reasons I miss visiting Arizona.

13.One of the other reasons I miss visiting Arizona is because it is a photographers dream.

Thursday Thirteen #48 The Bookshelf One

Thirteen Books on Sparky's shelf

I seem to be very popular with memes and tags for them. Actually I love that I get tagged all the time, because it means people are interested in my thoughts. Or they run out of people to ask and since I am around a lot, I am an easy target. I am going to go with idea number 1.

Anyway, Wylie of Wylie's Words did not officially tag me for this one, she did offer it to me to do if I needed something during the blogathon. I did not get to it then, but I will share it with everyone now. Its the bookshelf meme, an attempt to learn something about the blogger (that would be me) from the books that they have read.

Official Rules:
"The rules are to provide a list of books that you have on your shelves to see if anyone can learn about you from them - but not just any books. They have to be books that you've actually paid for, nothing given, borrowed, stolen, or whatever."

I think I paid for almost all of these, but they are all books that I have read and if I did not pay for them, I asked for them as a gift and everyone knows as you get older, the amount of gifts you get at your birthday is less, so its like buying. (Wow, long explanation for an easy list)

1.Sammy's Hill by Kristen Gore
2.See Jane Date by Melissa Senate. Actually read it right when I was about to get back into the dating scene, not exactly a confidence builder, but funny.
3.Every Witch way but Dead-Kim Harrison-currently my favorite paranormal witch series
4.My Sisters Keeper-Jodi Picoult-ok Mrs Duck bought this one, sue me. GREAT
5.Girls on Film by Zoey Dean-Its like a off shoot of the Gossip Girl series, certainly not as bad as it sounds.
6.Its Not You Its Me-Alison Rushby. Its a fiction book, from Red Dress Ink, not the dating guide for women. I am not that in touch with my feminine side, sheesh.
7.Nothing's Sacred by Lewis Black
8.Bragging Rights:A season inside the SEC by Richard Ensberger-hey, my first mention of a sports book!
9.God in Concord, a Homer Kelly Mystery by Jane Langton-I could read it again because I can not remember one thing about this book besides the fact I have read it.
10.Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand-Favorite Book Evah!
11.Worst Person in the World, Vol 1-Keith Olbermann I will behave and make absolutely no comments
12.Five Against One by Kim Neely-The story of the rise of Pearl Jam and Grunge. Yep, Im a grunge duck.
13.From Potter's Field by Patricia Cornwell-Slight problem with this book, its based on the books before it and I think I only read one of the 3, so the plot was gripping but not Oh wow gripping

Any of them books you have read? Any books I should read??
