Thursday Thirteen #55-A sad one

Thirteen Things about Charles Cassidy

Not the idea of a list that I had today, but events happen and you sort of roll with what strikes you at the time.

1.Charles Cassidy is 54 years old, a Philadelphia Police officer in the 35th District.

2.He has a wife and 3 children, two daughters in college and one son in a catholic city high school.

3.He has 25 years on the Philadelphia police force.

4.In fact, just a few weeks back, friends and family threw a part to celebrate his 25th year.

5.Officer Cassidy routinely made stops in the West Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia during his shift

6.One of those stops was at a local Dunkin Donuts at the corner of 66th and Broad Street.

7.Yesterday, at around 10:30 in the morning, Officer Cassidy made his stop, like he routinely does, pulling into the front of the donut shop in his Police SUV.

8.Yesterday, Officer Cassidy happened into an armed robbery in progress in the Donut shop.

9.Officer Cassidy was shot one time in the head before he could even draw his gun or enter the establishment. In fact he was shot outside the store, while assailant was inside at the front counter.

10.The shooter is said to be a heavyset African American male, around 6 feet tall, with a spider tattoo on his left hand. He also possibly has a limp when running. Police are also looking for a Crown Victoria that may have had some involvement.

11.This is the best surveillance tape picture so far of the shooter, in the background by the door you can see the outline of Officer Cassidy in his white shirt and dark tie.

12.Officer Cassidy was rushed to Albert Einstein hospital, with a gunshot wound to his head and the bullet in his brain.

13.Officer Cassidy passed away at around 9:40 am this morning, November 1, 2007. His murderer is still at large at present.

My dad was a cop, and we always lived in fear of this. These guys put their lives on the line every day for next to nothing. I hope they find the guy, soon.

Great, but sad, post, Sparky.

Mrs Ducks brother is a cop too in the city, so we are a bit on the edge of our seats here until they catch the asshole.

I can't imagine having a loved one in the line of duty. I'd never sleep. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

When I started reading your TT, I said to myself that I was hoping I would be wrong about the tragic direction it was heading. What a horrific story.

Peace be with his family and friends, and may his killer be found and brought to justice.

Great post! Thanks for making me remember what people like police officers or firemen do for us every day.

That's so tragic. My heart goes out to Officer Cassidy's family and I hope they catch the killers soon!

It doesn't become real until I read something like this. I heard about this yesterday and your post made it more real.

I am now crying for that man and his family's lives.

Tragic and sobering. But real life generally is, isn't it?

The amount of crime in this city scares the shit out me sometimes. I feel for his family and our community which is down one less hero, someone that helped keep us safe from this insanity.

I hope they catch the bastards!

Holy smoke, that shooter probably hit something one time in his life -- and it was a cop. What a stupid thing to get lucky with.

As if robbing a store was smart to begin with!

Thanks for posting this story, Sparks. It's given me much food for thought (as I was the ONLY car of about 12 who pulled over for a cop just now... Me, who lives across the street from a state trooper. Me, whose daughter is taught by a cop's wife.).

Yeah, lots of connections to law enforcement in my life. Thanks for standing up for them.

My ex BIL and his wife are both on the job as is a fraternity brother...When they find this piece of s**t slime, he needs to be 'tuned up' by a few fellow brother officers and then have a bullet put into his head...

Oh, Sparky! This is awful! It gives me the opportunity, though, to give thanks for the cops and firefighters and soldiers who are all willing to go into harm's way on my behalf.

I hope they find the murderer that's disgusting. That man is too young.

My thoughts are with the family and friends of that officer.

Makes me nervous as my little brother is in Law Enforcement.

Meggie Mom Fantastic said...

That is very sad :( I hope they find the murders quickly and subject them to a fate worse than being shot in the head.

Completely senseless and breaks my heart.

What a great idea to post it on your blog, raise awarness and maybe catch the murderer.

That's just too sad. It makes me so angry that there are bad people in this world. And when they get caught, they'll get trials and appeals and who knows what else. But that cop didn't. They need the same punishment.

Amy The Black said...

I hate hearing about the stupidity of criminals, especially those with guns. I wish his family and loved ones well and hope the criminal gets what he deserves.

Such a sad story. Mommakitty's brother is a peace officer who went into a casino a few months ago (as a guest) and found himself in the middle of 4 armed gunman - fortunately no one was hurt and the bad guys were caught 2 weeks later. Mommakitty worries about her brother everyday...just because of stories like this one. Prayers & purrs for this officers family - and prayers to catch the BAD guys!

My best friend is a cop. It's so easy to picture something like this happening to her.

Hope they catch those guys soon.

We take our police officers and firemen for granted far too much.

Thank you Sparky, wonderful tribute.
