Minnesota I-35W

I had a fun post planned for tonight, but in my mind this trumps anything fun.

Minneapolis Bridge Collapses into the Mississippi Daytime Piledriving????

Do you know those fever nightmares that you have? You know the ones where you are wrestling a giant spider, or feel your self being taken into a whirlpool that you can't escape from. In the mind of Sparky Duck, this story is one of my fever nightmares, one of my biggest silly fears.

I will light a candle for all the injured and possibly dead and keep them in my thoughts tonight.

Holy smoke, Sparky! What time did this happen?

7:10 or so our time Susan, so 6:10 where songbird is now I think.

Amy and I got home from dinner and I turned on the TV to find what was going on as I had heard part of it on the radio (yes, conservative talk/news).

I called my father (a trucker) who is currently out around Nebraska, and he explained a bit about the 35 E and W thing. Apparently it's one interstate that splits in two to envelope the two towns or something like that, so he knows it and has been over that bridge.

My greatest fear is that this is somehow related to the war on terrorism. In Spain they attacked the transportation system, and in London they have done the same. Over the years since 9-11-01 they have talked about infrastructure including bridges being possible targets.... I hope it's a tragedy related to engineering, but either way, these people are hurt and dead, and their families have to deal with it. I don't do candles (is that a Roman Catholic thing?), but thoughts and prayers are active.

I feel so horrible for them.

People have made fun of me before because I can't go over a bridge without thinking about the likelyhood of this happening. If people are with me, and it's a big bridge, I'll say something.

Isn't this just horrible? I saw it on the news and couldn't even believe it. I just can't imagine how these things can happen. I'm sure they have to check their stability, etc., right? Totally frightening!!!

We've had overpasses fail here in and around Montreal, it's a very big concern. Many have been closed and are being inspected... this hit home. I was watching this while talking on the phone. What saddens me even more is that as of this morning it is a recovery mission and no longer rescue.

My thoughts and prayers are with the mourning families and the wounded.

God keep the emergency response personel as the have the grim task of recovering those who have been trapped.

Thanks for this Duckie...

Such a tradgedy isn't it :( You just can't expect that to happen and I feel for the many people that were on that bridge.

Sparky, if you're having fever nightmares now, don't pick up today's Inquirer. Over 50% of Pennsylvania's bridges are "Structurally deficient".
Including the one where the Blue Route crosses the Schuylkill and the Schuylkill Expressway bridge that divides Center City from West Philly. And, of course the South Street bridge which has needed attention for a long time.

Eeep.
