Philly Wins Something-Worst Parents Ever

This is one of those coincidental times when something I was thinking of doing as a post seems to fall right into place with another bloggers train of thought post wise. Bond and his Big Leather Couch got into a discussion yesterday and today on his blog about how children these days are coddled and bubble wrapped and how No Child Left Behind is a great idea on paper, and an awful idea in practice. Hop over to the couch and get into the discussion.

Now, how does this tie in with the Duck? Well, this month Philadelphia Magazine did an article declaring Main Line Parents of Philadelphia to be the worst ever! Part of the problems that the article points out is the tutoring process of the SAT's, that costs upwards of $3000 by the way, that will teach your child how to figure out the test, as opposed to learning the information for the SAT's. Because apparently, everyone needs to get into Harvard.

Its also talks about how parents now adays seem to be determined to be there kids best friends as opposed to being the authoritative parent. As opposed to telling Johnny "hey, don't kick the dog" we tell little johnny "kicking the dog may not have been the best decision." Um no Johnny, stop kicking the damn dog before i kick you in the ass. But its easy for me to say, I don't have kids.

It also goes into how children are almost either not being allowed to fail by everyone makes the team, everyone plays, everyone gets a trophy rec league sports, or are being pushed to fail by keeping there expectations so high that they are unattainable. Alot of parents seem to be tying there success in life to what little Johnny and Katie achieve. Its the stage mom idea turned up 10 knots.

If I ever become a parent, and thats still a nice if, I will try to raise my children the way my parents raised me. I only got a spanking 5 or 6 times in my life, but, the fact that I had that fear of getting spanked kept me on the right path. I will strive to get my kids the thing they most want for Christmas or there birthdays, if it is something affordable or at least not frivilous like a pony. But, I will not be buying my kids a grand prize just for being a good boy this week. I will let my son or daughter lose at a game sometimes, because it teaches you to be a good loser. Now, if they beat me at video games, they should, but I still remember playing football board games with my dad or monopoly with my mom and it was loads more fun when we followed the rules and I still actually beat them. That was achievement.

If Scooter screws up in school, give him detention, because I will give him detention when he gets home. Don't do something that one of my fathers student's mothers did. When my dad, who was a Vice Prinicipal in a high school, told Mommy that Scooter was going to get a 3 day suspension for smoking in the bathroom, Mommy denied that Scooter was smoking and when my dad presented evidence, including Scooter saying that he was smoking, Mommy play acted being unconscious and passing out as opposed to accepting it and smacking Scooter behind the head. The paramedics, who were eventually called, even said she was faking. Yep, that coddling a bit.

Oh good, another topic I get positively exercised over. I don't have kids either, but I've had to put up with both the DH's and my brothers. Both are growing up under the "Johnny can do no wrong, and deserves everything I can possibly give him" method of child rearing.

OT, If you end up posting male hotties here, does that mean I have to post nekkid women on my blog?

i agree as a parent that children are coddled too much! when i was a kid, if the teacher told my parents i did something wrong, i could look forward to a good ass kicking when i got home. now, parents yell at the teacher and then sue them. (of course not every teacher is wonderful--there are always exceptions.) however, other parents used to tell mine when i was acting up and neighbors were nosey and it was all good. i miss that.

SPARKY: See, another example that Plaisted would say is "not that important, it is not happening everywhere"

Another example that anywhere to too many places... This is so freaking important and those that are burying their heads in the sand are in for a rude awakening when they finally look around.

I was thrilled that most of the people who came to THE COUCH understood there is a problem, and we had visitors who are not regulars so it was not just a "we like Bond, so we will agree with him" event...

Thanks for helping to spread the word that we are dumbing down our children to the realities of life...Not everyone can win and sometimes life sucks big time...get used to it...

Great weekend my friend...OH and when you start posting hot guys, how about a warning - ok? Sometimes I go over to Mo's and get eye blasted by 3/4 naked guys... ummmm not my cup 'o tea

LOL

Oh Sparky, you already got me riled up today about Bush and your TT which was freaking awesome. (see my blog for today...)

I was a sped teacher, no child left behind is just another big fat lie. Don't even get me going on the statistics behind it. Good thought, very poor follow through and oh by the way check out the reading program that is recommended, who owns it, where it's located. Oh the evil of it all.

If you had kids and had to deal with their schoolmates it would really horrify you, Sparky. Of course, I don't like kids. Other than my own that is :P

AMEN! Zed hasn't been spanked in a loooong time, because he quickly figured out that it was in his own best interest to follow the rules. We also don't have to repeat ourselves. We talk, he says "Yes Ma'am/Sir". He has respect for us, and other adults, and we give him the same respect and privleges for being a good kid. He knows that as long as he doesn't end up in jail or doing drugs, we're pretty much OK as long as we can still trust him. Elle only gets in trouble for trying to get her brother in trouble, but that phase is ending as well. Kids mouth off to authority because their challenges haven't been properly shut down and they haven't been taught respect. You have to earn it. It's not given freely, and they don't get that concept.

Lisa and I must be related, because my sister is raising her daugher with the same, Both are growing up under the "Johnny can do no wrong, and deserves everything I can possibly give him" method of child rearing, to the degree that it's making the rest of the extended family ill and beyond annoyed.

And I've borne witness to the "celebration of mediocrity" which competitive sports has become for kids these days. Everyone plays, everyone wins, even if it's seventh place, all to keep the tender egos over inflated. ARGGGGGGGGGGGH!!!

I couldn't agree with you more...thankfully, my daughter was raised to take responsibility, have manners, etc... & she's passing that onto my grandchildren.

These kids end up in my college classroom, and still refuse to take responsibility. One little precious used her book money to buy, "the cutest Coach bag EVER!"

Of course, her parents did not believe that it was her own fault she failed the class.

My in-laws are raising hellspawn in similar fashion. They think time-out is too harsh and damaging.

Oh, this topic is close to my heart and my husband's. We are more of the old fashion type and are completely OK with the "Because I said so" tactic.

Too much coddling just screws the kids up for the future if you ask me. The world, once they get out into it, will NOT coddle them or give a hoot. Better to teach them that they are not the center of the universe.

I think children are more prepared and ready for the world when their homelife is realistic and honest. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you don't what you want, sometimes you have to do things that you don't want to do and most times it's a compromise.
